Mr. Punch and Toby's Friends is a collection of humorous ‘doggy’ stories and poems, compiled by Punch magazine. Punch was a weekly magazine, popular for its comic drawings and political cartoons.
When the magazine was founded on 17 July 1841, the editors took their name from Mr. Punch of the seaside puppet show. ‘Toby’ was traditionally a live performing dog that accompanied a Punch and Judy performance.
Mr. Punch and Toby's Friends contains contributions from A. A. Milne, E. V. Lucas and other ‘Punch’ writers. Various breeds, from Pekingese to Irish Wolfhounds, are described in comic verse, and there are line drawings throughout.
