Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome (1884 –1967) is a delightful children’s tale of adventure, set in the summer of 1929 in the Lake District. It recalls the carefree, innocent days when youngsters could go camping, fishing, swimming and sailing alone, and the worst they had to fear was the occasional telling off from the adults.
The story concerns the 4 Walker children in their dinghy ‘Swallow’ who meet the 2 Blackett sisters, sailing in the ‘Amazon’. Life is a pirate adventure as the two crews compete with each other and declare war on the Blackett’s uncle, ‘Captain Flint’.
There are burglars, a missing trunk, a dangerous night-time lake crossing and someone ends up walking the plank, but it all ends happily with a post-battle feast, and plenty of lemonade and ginger beer.
