“Though 55 years have passed since Mason’s romantic novel of Hong Kong was first published…the work retains the power to seduce.” – Publishers Weekly.
The World of Suzie Wong is the tale of cross-cultural romance between a young aspiring English artist living in colonial Hong Kong, and Suzie Wong, a Chinese woman who works as a prostitute. Published in 1957, it proved an immediate bestseller for British writer Richard Mason (1919–1997). It was adapted into a Broadway play, a film and even a ballet.
Suzie Wong’s world is the waterfront of Hong Kong, and particularly the shady little hotel, the Nam Kok, where she and her colleagues provide brief companionship for sailors of many nations.
Aside from the story, The World of Suzie Wong also provides an evocative portrait of life in 1950s Hong Kong.
