All that we know who lie in gaol
 Is that the wall is strong;
And that each day is like a year,
  A year whose days are long. – Oscar Wilde

Joan Henry (1914 – 2000) was an English novelist, playwright and screenwriter from an illustrious family.

In 1951 the former debutante was sentenced to 12 months for passing a fraudulent cheque.

Henry served eight months behind bars, the majority at Holloway prison in London, and also at Askham Grange, an open prison in Yorkshire.

Who Lie in Gaol, which takes its title from Wilde’s poem, is an account of her experiences, in particular the brutal treatment and neglect she witnessed at Holloway, which at the time was the largest women's prison in western Europe.

The Weak and the Wicked (1954), starring Diana Dors, is based on Henry’s book.

Published by Victor Gollancz in 1954.

The book is in good condition with dust jacket and the binding is intact.
