Spanish writer Gonzalo Torné, writing in El Pais in January 2025, remarks that "edifying literature today gets a bad press."
By edifying, Torné meant "that which aims to achieve an effect of elevation in readers, to make them better, to increase their understanding and compassion so that they come out of reading as better parents, best friends, better companions, better citizens, and even better lovers."
