This is a striking photography collection that showcases German photographer Angelika Platen’s celebrated portraits of leading contemporary artists.
Published in 1998, the book brings together more than a hundred images captured over several decades, portraying figures such as Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter and many others in their studios, workplaces and creative environments. Rather than conventional celebrity portraits,
Platen’s photographs reveal the personalities, working methods and artistic identities of her subjects, offering a unique visual history of post-war and contemporary art. Combining documentary insight with artistic sensitivity, the book provides an intimate look at the people behind some of the most influential artworks of the twentieth century.
The book was published by Edition Stemmle and contains approximately 143–146 pages of artist portraits, with text presented in English, German and French.
"The art scene fascinated me; the avant-garde of '68, my contemporaries, had not yet achieved fame, many of them were still practically unknow, and I was able to point my lens at them. It was the dawn of a new age all around us." - quotation from Angelika Platen.
