First comprehensive publication on BMW Art Cars.
The development of the "rolling sculptures" since 1975.
For design and art enthusiasts, as well as all car and technology lovers.

Twelve years after the first run of the Benz Patent Motor Car Number 1 in July 1886, a car races across the frame in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's lithograph *The Automobilist*. At the beginning of the 20th century, *La 628-E8*, a novel bearing the car number of its author, Octave Mirbeau, in its title, was published.

In his Futurist Manifesto, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti valued the beauty of the roar and the speed of a racing car more highly than the aesthetics of the Winged Victory of Samothrace.

Artists have been exploring the automobile since its invention. BMW Art Cars play a central role in this: Alexander Calder's BMW 3.0 CSL marked the beginning of a series in 1975, initiated by Hervé Poulain, a lover of both car racing and art, and BMW Motorsport Director Jochen Neerpasch.

Since then, 17 artists have designed BMW models, with their "rolling sculptures" proving their worth not only in museums but also, in some cases, on the Le Mans racetrack.

The featured artists: Sandro Chia, Ken Done, Olafur Eliasson, Ernst Fuchs, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Michael Jagamara Nelson, Matazo Kayama, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Esther Mahlangu, César Manrique, A.R. Penck, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol.
