The Hidden River is a novel, set in France in 1949, in the aftermath of the Second World War.
France is struggling to come to terms with the repercussions of the Occupation, as a young Englishman, Adam Hartley, returns to the area where he worked in Special Intelligence during the war.
He finds a society deeply divided; some people want to take revenge on anyone who collaborated in any way, while others just want a fresh start.
Through Adam’s eyes, The Hidden River explores what exactly Justice means, and how lives can be rebuilt, when emotions are raw, grief is fresh and great evil has been done.
Margaret Storm Jameson (1891 – 1986) was an English journalist and author, known for her novels and reviews.
